K’inich Janaab’ Pakal I, or Pakal the Great, was the 7th-century ruler of Palenque whose 68-year reign sparked a golden age of Maya art and monumental architecture. He is most famous for his elaborate tomb within the Temple of the Inscriptions, a discovery that provided a definitive map of Maya cosmology and royal history.
