El Dios Del Maíz - 19.75” W x 23.5” H, Pencil on Paper
This drawing is a representation of the God of Corn, El Dios Maya Del Maíz. The Mayan maize god, adorned with corn cobs, emerges from the interior of the earth, represented by the effigy of the earth monster.
In Mayan cosmology, maíz was not just food—it was the sacred essence of life. According to the Popol Vuh, the Maya creation story, the gods formed the first humans from maize dough, making it the divine substance of mankind. The Mayan Maize God, often depicted as a youthful deity with a corn-shaped headdress, symbolized fertility, rebirth, and abundance.
The Maize God’s life cycle mirrored the agricultural process—he was buried (like a seed), reborn from the earth, and ascended to the sky, reflecting the cycle of planting and harvesting.
